A convertible sofa can have a real mattress which can be up to 20 cm thick. A block of low density polyether foam of 25 kg/m3 can only be used for occasional sleeping, because the support is not sufficient. For daily sleeping, it is recommended to turn to different mattress technologies:
- Latex whose firmness will depend on its density (soft at 65 kg/m3, medium around 75 kg/m3 and very firm at 83 kg/m3).
- Polyurethane foam is the most basic material for a mattress. It can have a density of 30 kg/m³ for a soft mattress, 40 kg/m³ for a medium mattress and 50 kg/m³ for a firm or viscoelastic foam mattress.
- The springs which ensure the maintenance of the body with its metal structure. Pocket springs are springs individually wrapped in non-woven fabric and glued or sewn together. They allow good sleeping independence.
- Memory foam mattresses are still uncommon as a bed in convertible sofas. This material is highly recommended for back or joint pain, because it absorbs pressure on the support areas. The alternative can be high resilience foam which supports the back and lumbar, thanks to a higher density of foam.
- Viscoelastic memory foam has the disadvantage of not being suitable for people who sweat excessively at night. It is preferable to turn to latex. Because latex is a hypoallergenic material of natural origin, made from rubber tree sap. Otherwise, pocket springs allow free circulation of air and therefore natural ventilation of the mattress.
What size sofa to choose?
If you have space at home, you can opt for a larger convertible sofa size , or even a corner sofa. You will thus have more seats, to accommodate your guests comfortably.
