ALL QUESTIONS ABOUT THE CONVERTIBLE WORLD
What do you call a convertible sofa?
A convertible sofa is a sofa that transforms into a bed and whose seat is independent of the mattress.
There are 3 types of convertible sofas, which correspond to different mattress thicknesses and different mechanics:
- Occasional sleeping: mattress 6 cm thick. Mechanical: you have to remove the cushions to “open the sofa” and transform it into a bed
- Regular bedding: mattress thickness 10 to 12 cm. Mechanics: only the seat cushions are mobile and follow the mechanics. The back cushions can be removed to transform the sofa into a bed.
- Daily bedding (the most common today): mattress with a minimum thickness of 14 cm. Mechanism called rapido: the 4 cushions (seats and back) remain attached to the sofa. You don't have to remove anything to open the product, just pull it towards you.
Not to be confused, convertible sofa and convertible bench for which the folded mattress also serves as a seating surface.
A convertible sofa is a sofa that can be quickly and easily unfolded to convert it into a bed. You can use it as a classic fixed sofa for seating and also use it as a bed when unfolded. For this, the convertible has a seating surface that can be reconfigured into a bed or a built-in bed that can simply be unfolded.
Depending on whether you use it often or not, the convertible sofa will be dedicated to a specific type of sleeping: occasional, regular or daily sleeping.
These categories designate the mode of mechanics involved in the folding and unfolding of the bed and also the different convertible structures and the mattress
How to choose a good convertible sofa?
First tip: the best way to choose your convertible sofa is to contact a specialist. He knows how to listen to your expectations to offer you a solution adapted to your particular needs. Entry-level, mid-range or high-end, you can choose, depending on your budget, the product that perfectly meets your needs. In addition, from a specialist, you get precise explanations and you have a complete range of models, available quickly.
Tip Two: Your needs are unique. If you weigh less than 60 kg and plan to use your sofa bed once or twice a year, your ideal convertible will not be for a couple who wants to sleep there every night. Depending on whether you install it in a studio, in a large living room or in a bedroom, depending on whether you prioritize your sleeping comfort, the decoration of your interior or your seating comfort, the convertible sofa that suits you will not be the even.
Likewise, the dimensions of the sofa, the thickness of the mattress, the type of mechanics (see question 1) the choices of coverings, all these elements may vary depending on your tastes, the place in which it will be installed and the the available surface area.
In any case, make sure you get the best quality/price ratio. Remember that not all convertible sofas are created equal. The quality of the materials used, the mechanics, the mattress, the covering, the seat foam, etc. are all criteria that come into play to determine the quality of a convertible. Comfort, durability, its functional performance, its aesthetics, its ease of maintenance, remember to evaluate each point to choose your convertible.
Final advice: be sure to check the delivery conditions and times, and any guarantees in the event of incidents. Here again, the advantage of the specialist, such as LA MAISON CONVERTIBLE, will be to offer you the greatest choice at the best acquisition and installation conditions, while allowing you to benefit from maximum guarantees.
How to explain the price difference between convertibles?
Two essential criteria come into play to explain the price differences between one convertible sofa and another: the type of sofa and the quality of the product.
First difference factor: the quality of the sofa. Quality of materials, quality of mechanics, manufacturing, assemblies, quality of the covering, quality of the mattress , quality of the seat foams, so many criteria which will determine the price of your convertible sofa. If you choose a sofa with high resilience seat foam, a quality mattress, robust, functional and resistant mechanics, you will necessarily have to pay a higher price than that of a low-end sofa made with materials with inferior qualities.
- Our advice : Judge the price, but above all judge the quality/price ratio. Sometimes one investment may seem preferable to another, but when you compare the qualities of the two convertibles, you discover that they are very different in terms of comfort, durability, safety and elegance…
Second differentiating point: the typology. There is a wide variety of convertibles. So a convertible bench (BZ or CLIC-CLAC) will not have armrests such as you can find on a convertible sofa. This latest model will be much more structured with back cushions, seat cushions, armrests... a difference in structure which will have an impact on the price of the convertible. As well as the dimensions of the sofa and the types of covering, a convertible sofa with a bed of 160 cm and a leather covering will cost more than one which has a fabric covering with a bed of 80 cm.
Please note : The place of purchase in which you choose your convertible will also influence the price offered. In a non-specialized supermarket, you will often find entry-level products with a limited choice. On the general web: you can find everything, often low-end products, limited choice. At a specialist you will be able to find a very wide variety of models to meet all your needs with quality products.
Caution: It is necessary to differentiate between lightweight and robust mechanics. In fact, the lighter ones, which may seem easier to open, are often the least durable.
Where can you buy a convertible sofa?
Several places of acquisition are at your disposal : you can find your convertible in a specialist store (this is recommended), or in a large furniture store, in a non-specialized supermarket, and also on the internet on a distributor site or on online platforms dedicated to the purchase of second-hand goods.
Our suggestion : Treat yourself to the widest choice and the best quality/price ratio by visiting the No. 1 convertible specialist in France: LA MAISON CONVERTIBLE . List of stores on https://www.lamaisonconvertible.fr/pages/magasins
With a specialist you have the advantage of being guided towards the convertible sofa that perfectly meets your needs. You discover a large choice of models, available quickly, and you benefit from better quality/price ratio for your convertible. Colors, choice of coverings, dimensions, type of bedding or mechanics, etc. you can treat yourself to something tailor-made. In addition, a specialist distributor offers you superior guarantees and an optimized service for the delivery or installation of your convertible.
Second-hand sites can offer great deals and you may get lucky, but remember that you will be purchasing, without any guarantee, equipment that has already been used. In this case, you take the risk of both good and bad surprises.
Large furniture retailers can also offer you solutions that suit you. However, you will often find entry-level products, with few models available, often few products, few differences in range. If you are looking for a model that best meets your expectations, you will often save time and money by discovering models from a specialist distributor.
In general shopping centers: small range of products, no quality
Pure player web: we find everything. Little advice, the trend is towards low-end products

ALL QUESTIONS ABOUT MECHANICS, BEING AND SEATING
What do we call the mechanics of a convertible sofa?
The mechanics of a convertible correspond to the device which will allow the sofa to be opened and closed to convert it into a bed.
There are different mechanical systems which each correspond to a particular type of sleeping: regular, daily or occasional sleeping.
As the mechanics do not all accept the same mattress thicknesses, they vary according to your needs. Thus, the mechanisms for daily sleeping will be easier to open and will allow the use of a thicker mattress. In the case of occasional or regular sleeping , which requires a mattress thickness greater than 10cm, the mechanics used will be different from that of occasional sleeping, requiring a thinner mattress.
LA MAISON CONVERTIBLE offers you exclusively patented mechanics, manufactured in France and Europe. These mechanics are reliable and guaranteed.
The quality of a mechanism corresponds to its value in terms of practicality, comfort and durability. It differs depending on the manufacturer and the materials used. These differences partly explain the price differences between convertible sofas. Choosing a non-patented mechanism may seem attractive considering the budget, but the quality of such a mechanism can vary from worst to best.
What is the seat of a convertible?
On a convertible sofa , the seat is independent of the mattress on which you sleep. This is the part we sit on when the sofa bed is in the sofa position. It is made up of cushions, most often made of polyurethane foam. Its comfort depends primarily on the foam. The comfort of the seat depends on the foams used.
On a convertible bench (BZ or CLIC-CLAC), the bed and the seat become one . The seat is made up of the mattress which serves as a bed when the bed is unfolded. In the sofa position, you are then seated on the folded mattress, protected by the cover.
Please note : LA MAISON CONVERTIBLE offers you high resilience seat foams which ensure perfect comfort. Resilience being the ability of a foam (a material or an assembly) to regain its initial appearance after the application of pressure, high resilience foams ensure optimal comfort for a long time.
What is the bed base of a convertible?
The bed base of a convertible corresponds to the part which is under the mattress.
There are essentially two main types of bed bases: The slatted bed base and the grid bed base (metal mesh with spring suspensions). The bed base is also the central element of what we call the mechanics of the convertible. Once unfolded, the mechanism constitutes the bed base of the sofa bed.
FYI : Some convertibles intended for very occasional use can sometimes have a third type of bed base: the stretched canvas bed base.
What are the different types of bedding?
There are three main types of sleeping arrangements:
- Occasional sleeping
- Regular sleeping
- Daily sleeping
When you sleep on your convertible sofa every night, you use it as a daily bed. When you sleep there once or twice a week, it is considered regular sleeping. If you unfold the sofa to sleep on it once a month or less, then you use it for occasional sleeping.
The type of bed imposes different characteristics for your convertible : We can also compare the type of bed to the frequency of use. This is an essential factor to take into account when choosing your sofa. Depending on whether you want to sleep every day in your convertible sofa or once or twice a year, your needs will not be the same.
Remember : Who can do more, can do less. When you don't know what type of sleeping to choose, choose a sofa intended for regular or daily sleeping rather than occasional sleeping. You will benefit from optimized durability and comfort.
Do you sleep well in a convertible sofa?
You sleep in a convertible sofa as well as in a good bed.
Whether you sleep in a bed or in a convertible sofa, you will appreciate the same sleeping comfort if you have chosen a product adapted to your expectations and your uses. For example, if you use your convertible for daily sleeping with a 14cm mattress, you will not have the same needs as someone using it for occasional sleeping.
The quality of the bed is essentially linked to the quality of the mattress . It is therefore an important element to evaluate when choosing your sleeping comfort. A thicker or denser mattress, a better quality box spring or mechanism, suitable dimensions, all factors that will affect the quality of your installation.
To sleep there every day, is it better to choose a convertible or a bed?
Bed or convertible sofa, your quality of sleep will be the same, including for daily sleeping!
The main thing is to choose the model adapted to your type of sleeping (occasional, regular, daily), your body shape, the dimensions of the room, and your preferences in terms of comfort. As long as the convertible is adapted to your needs, you can enjoy comfort equivalent to that of a good bed.
Remember that the quality of your bed will be determined largely by the quality of your mattress, but not only that. You will therefore have to choose the right mattress, but also the right mechanics and the right box spring.
Can two people sleep in a convertible sofa?
You can sleep two in a convertible sofa as comfortably as in a good bed.
The sleeping widths of a convertible sofa range from 80cm to 160cm:
- 80cm for a single person
- 120cm rather for 2 children
- 140cm for 2 people
- 160cm is a large size for 2 people, for more space
Size has nothing to do with quality. On the other hand, obviously, for the same product, the bigger it is, the more expensive it is.
Concerning the length, the standard dimension of a convertible sofa is 200cm.
To sleep every day, which product should you choose?
Always choose a convertible sofa suited to your type of sleeping: regular, occasional or daily sleeping and adapt the criteria according to:
The choice of mattress : the quality of the bed being essentially determined by the quality of the mattress, choose mattresses of good thickness and density. Denser, for toned support. Less dense for soft sleeping.
The choice of dimensions : The sleeping widths of a convertible sofa range from 80cm to 160cm. The standard length of a convertible sofa is 200cm.
The choice of mechanism : As the mechanisms do not all accept the same mattress thicknesses, your choice will be a mechanism designed for daily sleeping which allows the use of a thicker mattress, at least greater than 10 cm. The ideal is a product with a 14 cm mattress. Indeed, we distinguish 3 types of categories among convertible sofas: Occasional sleeping 6cm. Regular bedding 10 to 12cm. Daily sleeping from 14cm.
In addition, depending on the layout of your space, you will choose a mechanism that unfolds your bed parallel to the wall ( CLIC-CLAC convertible bench ) or perpendicular to the wall ( BZ convertible bench , convertible sofa ). The quality of the mechanics should be all the greater the more often you sleep there. Daily folding and unfolding will be more reliable and more efficient over time using patented mechanisms such as those offered by LA MAISON CONVERTIBLE.
What are the different opening systems?
There are three main types of opening systems:
- The convertible sofa (daily, regular or occasional sleeping)
- The BZ convertible bench
- The CLIC-CLAC convertible bench
The three devices : The BZ bench is a single piece bench that you unfold in a single movement, while the CLIC-CLAC unfolds in two steps (click, you lift the bottom of the seat, clack, you unfold the bed). The Rapido offers a simple and quick opening system. You unfold it in a single movement by pulling towards you while the cushions remain attached to the mechanism.
Different sleeping directions : In a BZ bench as in a RAPIDO sofa, you will sleep perpendicular to the wall. The length of the bed unfolds into the depth of the room when you extend the bed. Unlike a CLIC-CLAC sofa, in which you will sleep parallel to the wall. In the sofa position, the seat surface of the CLIC-CLAC corresponds to the length of the bed.
Structures that vary : In a RAPIDO type convertible sofa, you have independence between the sofa and the bed. The seat cushions and back cushions welcome you when you are seated, and when the sofa is unfolded, you sleep on the mattress incorporated inside the convertible. On the contrary, the BZ bench and the CLIC-CLAC are in one piece and the folded mattress also serves as a seating surface. A more structured sofa, with back cushions, seat cushions and armrests, the RAPIDO corresponds to the models that you will most often find at the top of the range.
What is seat foam?
The seat corresponds to the part of the sofa on which you are seated when it is folded (sofa in day mode).
• On a BZ or Clic-Clac convertible bench, the seat is provided by the mattress.
• On a convertible sofa, the mattress and the seat are separate.
Seat foam is the material that makes up the seat cushions of the convertible sofa. (In a BZ or Clic-Clac convertible bench, the seat is provided by the folded mattress. In this case the seat foam designates the composition of the mattress, if it is foam.)
The quality of a seat foam is characterized by two criteria: resilience and density . What is resilience? It is the ability of an element or a material to regain its shape after having been subjected to the exercise of pressure. For better comfort, it is better to favor high-resilience seat foams, such as the high-resilience polyurethane seat foams offered in the LA MAISON CONVERTIBLE models. You will also find feather seats, or feather surfacing (high resilience polyurethane foam + feathers).
Please note: the denser the density, the firmer the mattress.
Is the seat as comfortable on a convertible as on a fixed one?
Yes . Nowadays, a convertible sofa offers you a seat as comfortable as on a fixed sofa. Determined by the quality of the seat foam, your comfort will be even greater if you use good quality foams, such as the high resilience polyurethane foams offered by LA MAISON CONVERTIBLE.
How does seat foam affect my comfort?
The quality of the seat foam influences the elasticity, hold and softness of the seat .
When you sit on your convertible sofa, you sit on the seat. The seat is independent of the mattress. The higher the quality of the seat foam, the greater your comfort.
For better comfort, choose high-resilience seat foams, such as the high-resilience polyurethane seat foams offered in the LA MAISON CONVERTIBLE models. You can also choose seats made of feathers or feather surfacing (high resilience polyurethane foam + feathers).
All foams, even if they are high resilience, differ. And that has a lot to do with comfort.
For information : The resilience of a seat foam corresponds to its ability to return to its initial shape after the application of a pressure force.
What qualities of foam are offered?
LA MAISON CONVERTIBLE offers you High Resilience Polyurethane seat foams.
These High Resilience Polyurethane foams ensure optimal comfort. Remember that resilience is defined by the ability of an element to return to its initial shape after the exercise of a pressure force. This quality and density of the foam guarantee ideal support and perfect flexibility. You can also choose seats made of feathers or feather surfacing (high resilience polyurethane foam + feathers).
Our advice : Avoid Polyether foams, the quality of which is significantly inferior to high resilience Polyurethane foams, which are much more comfortable and more resistant.
ALL QUESTIONS ABOUT THE BED BASE AND MATTRESS
How do I choose my mattress?
The comfort offered by a mattress varies depending on its dimensions, its thickness, its density and also the quality of the foam that constitutes it.
Remember that the choice of a mattress is essential because it is the primary element which will define your sleeping comfort in a convertible sofa.
To choose the right mattress, you must first define how you will use your sofa: daily sleeping, regular sleeping, occasional sleeping.
Choose the dimensions : the sleeping widths of a convertible sofa range from 80cm to 160cm. 80cm is for a single person. 120 cm ok for 2 children. 140cm or 160cm for 2 people. The standard length of a convertible sofa is 200cm.
To choose a good mattress, you will also choose its thickness and density according to your body type, your frequency of use, and also according to your personal tastes. The greater the density of your mattress, the firmer your bed will be. If you prefer a soft bed, you will opt for a less dense mattress.
You can also benefit from trusted brands. We have chosen the best partners to manufacture our own LA MAISON CONVERTIBLE mattresses.
The thickness of the mattress is essential: 6cm for occasional sleeping, 10 to 12 cm for regular sleeping, and from 13cm for daily sleeping.
Remember : A specialist will be very helpful in choosing your mattress. LA MAISON CONVERTIBLE directs you to the model that meets your needs. You also have the guarantee of benefiting from a quality mattress, most of the time labeled by a trusted brand.
Can we change the mattress when ordering?
Yes . On some models, you can choose different mattress options, tailored to your specific needs and tastes.
How does the density of a mattress affect my comfort?
The denser the mattress, the firmer it will be.
If your personal tastes lead you towards a soft and soft bed, opt for a less dense mattress . If, on the contrary, you prefer dynamic and tonic support, you will choose a mattress with higher density.
What is a memory foam mattress?
Offering excellent support, the memory foam mattress is made of thermosensitive viscoelastic foam which has the ability to adapt to the shape of the body, relieve pressure points and return to the initial shape after a change of position.
The memory foam mattress is enveloping. It softens under the weight of the body thanks to the molding of the foam cells. The sleeper's muscles relax, allowing the body to relax while maintaining the initial position of the spine. This is why the memory foam mattress is particularly suitable for people suffering from back or joint pain.
Memory foam is thermo-sensitive: it reacts depending on heat. This is why it is preferable to ensure that the room is kept at around 20° C so as not to alter the comfort of the mattress.
FYI : The memory foam mattress was first a technology developed by NASA before being then used by medical establishments and then made available to the general public
What does high resilience mattress mean?
The resilience of a material or an assembly is defined by its ability to regain its shape after being subjected to the exercise of pressure.
For better comfort and greater durability, it is better to choose mattresses with high resilience, a guarantee of quality for your mattress.
What are the different mattress sizes?
The sleeping widths of a convertible sofa range from 80cm to 160cm:
- 80cm for a single person
- 120cm rather for 2 children
- 140cm for 2 people
- 160cm is a large size for 2 people, for more space
In general, sizes vary from 20cm by 20cm
The question of lengths:
The standard size is 200cm . Mattress lengths can vary from 190, 200 to 210 cm, depending on the type of bed you need.
Occasional and regular sleeping arrangements require mattresses of 190 cm in length. For daily sleeping arrangements, the possible and proposed choices are 200 cm mattresses, or even 210 cm mattresses from certain manufacturers. Also note that this size has a tolerance of 2 to 3% compared to the actual size. Thus a 190 cm mattress can have a real length of 185 cm. It also depends on the size of the person… if they are 2m tall they need a large mattress!
Please remember : In France, the standard size of a sofa bed mattress is 140 cm x 200 cm (width x length).
What are the maximum and minimum mattress dimensions?
The width of the mattresses can vary from 80 cm up to 160 cm wide.
You can choose a minimum size of 80, for single person beds, up to bed sizes of 160 for the largest sizes. In France, the standard size of a mattress is 140 x 200 cm (Width x Length ).
As for the length of the mattress , it will be at least 190 cm for occasional or regular sleeping and rather 200 cm, or more rarely 210 cm for daily sleeping.
Does frequent folding of the convertible damage my mattress?
NO. Convertible sofa mattresses are designed to accommodate folding without warping.
Unlike standard fixed bedding mattresses , convertible mattresses are shaped especially for this use. They are therefore specially designed to not be damaged when closing the convertible.
Please note : although convertible sofa mattresses have better endurance when folding and unfolding, a high-end mattress will necessarily age better than an entry-level mattress.
Choose a grid base or a slatted base?
Slatted base or metal grids, you will find models of excellent quality in both cases . How to choose ?
- Depending on your type of sleeping Depending on whether you want regular, daily or occasional sleeping, you will be directed towards models which have one or the other of these two types of bed bases.
- Depending on your personal preferences : As a general rule, the slatted base will provide more firmness to the bed than the grid base. The grid base is made of metal mesh with spring suspensions and it often offers you a more flexible bed.
Remember : your sleeping comfort is essentially linked to the choice of your mattress, which can be more or less dense and more or less thick. For example, you will choose a denser one for a firm bedding, and a lower density if you prefer a soft bedding.
Can you use a mattress topper on a convertible sofa?
Once the bed is unfolded, nothing prevents you from adding a mattress topper of at least 5 cm to add a soft welcome to a mattress that you consider too firm. On the other hand, you should never close the mechanism of the sofa bed with the mattress topper inside. The total thickness would be too great and you risk damaging the mechanics.
COATING AND MAINTENANCE
How many coverings are there possible?
It depends on the product, brand, and manufacturer.
For almost all the products offered by LA MAISON CONVERTIBLE stores, you have a choice of options and you can infinitely personalize your covering .
Leather, fabric or microfiber, the freedom is yours . Depending on your personal tastes, the decoration and layout of your room, you select the covering that you want. Each manufacturer offers a wide range of coatings. Whether for colors or materials, you have a very wide range of options.
The case of “fabric provided” : you can also choose a particular fabric from a publisher of your choice. All you need to do is be sure to select a fabric called “upholstery fabric” , then have it delivered so that it can be assembled and sewn to create your personalized covering.
This amounts to tailor-made. The delay is therefore longer.
Do I have a choice of coverings and colors?
For almost all products offered by LA MAISON CONVERTIBLE stores. You have a choice of options and you can customize your covering almost endlessly.
YES. You have the choice of coverings and colors . Leather, fabric or micro fiber, you choose freely according to your personal tastes, the decoration and the layout of your room. Whether it's the colors or the material, each manufacturer offers you a wide range of options from which you can choose. The customization possibilities are almost endless.
Good to know : you can also choose a particular fabric from a publisher of your choice and then have it delivered to us so that it can be assembled, this is what we call “the fabric provided”. Please note, in this case, you must ensure that you choose a fabric called “upholstery fabric”, a quality necessary to be made into a covering.
How do I choose the ideal covering for my convertible?
To choose your covering correctly, you must take into account essentially 3 criteria:
Your desires and your personal tastes : it is well known that all tastes are natural. So let yourself be tempted by the color and material that appeals to you. You want a candy white or English green fabric,...Treat yourself.
The type of room and its decoration : depending on whether you want to use your sofa in a bedroom or a living room, you will not choose the same type of fabric (entry, medium or high-end). Just as leather may be preferred for a formal sofa bed. The tone and color combinations will also need to be taken into account so that your sofa does not clash with the decoration of the room in which you will install it.
Durability and maintenance : leather is easy to maintain, micro fiber most often has an anti-stain treatment, and certain fabrics can also have an additional anti-stain treatment option. Furthermore, the fabrics we offer are furnishing fabrics whose resistance to abrasion and friction has been tested before their entry into the collection.
What is the difference between micro fiber and fabric?
The difference is in the definition: The fabric is woven, the micro-fiber is canvased . It is therefore essentially a difference of nature and not necessarily of quality. You will be able to find micro-fiber fabrics and canvases at entry level or high end.
Microfiber is easier to wash
Are your coverings treated anti-stain?
Most often, yes . Thus, the micro fiber coverings have benefited from an anti-stain treatment (scothgard). Some fabrics are also offered with an original anti-stain treatment and others with an additional anti-stain treatment.
How to clean a convertible sofa?
Because we know that a beautiful leather sofa or armchair is a piece of furniture that we love and that we want to take great care of, here we give you our expert advice and tips for maintaining and removing stains from your leather. .
Regular maintenance : A simple cloth or damp sponge, soaked in a little detergent, will be your best allies. We dust the chair from edge to edge or from seam to seam. Quite simply. And we avoid rubbing too much, this damages the leather. Just as we should always avoid overly moistening leather. Leathers require a lot of delicacy! To clean smooth leathers, you can use a beaten egg white, or the recipe for hot (but not boiling) sour beer.
To do this, pour beer into an open container and leave it for several days near a heat source. Then, gently rub your sofa with a cloth soaked in this beer. In any case, if you notice that the color of the leather is showing on the cloth, stop cleaning immediately.
In case of stains : Most non-greasy stains on smooth leather disappear by gently rubbing with a damp cloth.
For sugary food stains : Remove by passing over a cloth soaked in a water/alcohol mixture (9/10th water and the rest alcohol).
Alcoholic beverage, coffee and tea stains : Start by blotting as much as possible with absorbent paper, then use a cloth and a mixture of half water and half alcohol.
Milk stains : Use 28% ammonia water on a cloth with which you gently rub the stained area.
Candle and shoe polish stains : First, gently scrape off the wax or shoe polish with a wooden spatula or spoon. Then you dab the stained area with mineral spirits.
Ink and ballpoint pen stain : Apply a cotton swab soaked in a mixture of one quarter water and three quarters alcohol to the pen or ink mark.
Recent greasy stains : We overcome these stains by starting by sprinkling them with talcum powder or Sommières earth. Leave it on for several hours, then brush. We start again if necessary.
Water-based paint stains : You just need soapy water.
Solvent Paint Stains : For these, use Turpentine.
Blood stains : They are removed with white vinegar or acetic acid diluted in water. Finally, for sebum stains generally left on the top of the backrests and sometimes on the armrests, we act exactly as for grease stains, with talc or Sommières earth.
Following our advice for maintaining your mattress and for removing stains from your leather armchairs and/or sofas, here are all our tips for removing stains on a fabric armchair or sofa . If your sofa has a removable cover, the first thing to do in the event of a stain is to remove this cover and clean it completely to avoid marks forming on the fabric. Only then can you treat the stains, depending on the fabric your sofa is made of.
Butter or fat stains:
- Cotton : If it is white, you can use soapy water or trichlorethylene. For colored fabrics, use water with a little ammonia.
- Silk : Sprinkle the stains with talcum powder, wait for the fabric to absorb then brush gently.
- Wool : You can use Sommières earth powder.
Alcoholic beverage stains : Stains should be absorbed using blotting paper, a sponge or a cotton cloth. Then rub gently with just a little water. If this is not enough, you can use soapy water (dishwashing liquid) or rub the stain with dry Marseille soap, and wait a few hours before rinsing with water.
Candle Stains : The first step is to gently scrape off the wax, with a spatula or spoon. Next, take a blotting paper, place it on the stain and run a hot iron over it. Finally, if after this operation there remains a greasy stain, apply a little benzine on it, using a cloth.
Coffee stains : For coffee, several solutions are available to you. On wool or silk, use water with 90° alcohol. For other fabrics: you can apply warm glycerin before rinsing. Or, rub the stain with just damp Marseille soap. Another solution: a mixture of water, alcohol and a smaller quantity of acetic acid, to apply to the stain. Finally, sodium perborate can remove coffee stains, but also tea or fruit stains.
Tea stains : Soapy water is enough if you intervene right away. For older stains, use glycerin with the soapy water. For synthetic fabrics, you can also use water mixed with lemon juice, before rinsing well. Another solution: mix white vinegar and 90° alcohol.
Chocolate stains : Often, cold water will do the trick. If this is not the case, you can rub gently with a cloth dampened with benzine or alcohol.
Ballpoint pen stains : For white cotton, the best solution will be lemon juice. For other fabrics, you can use a mixture of equal parts vinegar and rubbing alcohol.
Fruit/vegetable stains:
- For natural fibers : As with coffee, you can use the mixture of water, alcohol and acetic acid.
- Wool : Dab with a cloth soaked in a little vinegar, then rinse.
- Synthetic fabrics: It is best to use soapy water. Otherwise, you can try with lightly alcoholic water. For red fruit stains, you can also apply a cotton pad soaked in lemon juice to the stain before rinsing.
Lipstick stains : Start by soaking the stain with warm glycerin. Rub gently then rinse.
Nail polish stains : Above all, avoid nail polish removers. Use acetone or amyl acetate.
Wine stains : Forget the reflex which consists of sprinkling the stain with salt, this will only make things worse since the salt fixes the stain. If possible, sprinkle the wet spot with cornstarch instead. Brush, then dab with a cloth soaked in milk. If necessary, you can rub with a little soapy water to remove the stain.
For deep cleaning , the choice of dry cleaning is recommended. On convertible sofas, the seat and cushions are always removable. The body (armrest, body) is not always. Some fabrics can be machine cleaned, but the dry cleaner offers you the guarantee of cleaning carried out to standards by a professional. As a general rule, seat cushions and back cushions have removable covers and can easily be taken to the dry cleaner.
For small stains , use a damp sponge to which you can also add a little Marseille soap if necessary.
Are there specific sheet sizes for a convertible sofa?
Not particularly, it is the dimensions of the mattress which will define the size of the sheets used.
The sleeping widths of a convertible sofa range from 80cm to 160cm. At 80cm it is for a single person. At 140cm it is for 2 people. 160cm is a large size. 120 cm ok for 2 children.
Each of its sizes corresponds to a size of sheets to use. So, when your sofa has a mattress size of 140 x 200 (standard size in France), you use a mattress protector, a fitted sheet and sheets adapted to these dimensions.
Can you leave your sheets in a convertible sofa?
Subject to precautions, yes.
As long as it's very fine! Otherwise it will damage the sofa. You can keep your mattress protectors, fitted sheet, sheets and small blankets inside the folded sofa. On the other hand, avoid folding the convertible leaving a large duvet inside because you risk straining the mechanism. In the long run, this could damage it.
Good to know : some models have pillow organizers or duvet organizers integrated into the sofa. For example, in some corner sofa models, the chaise longue also serves as a storage box.
